School of Rock!

"There's no way you can stop... The School of Rock!"

‘What’s on Stage’ named it Best New Musical of 2017 and now School of Rock is headbanging its way into its second full year in the West End, at the New London Theatre.

Our school and youth groups love the show and it’s easy to see why: with its awe-inspiring young cast playing note-perfect live music, a hilarious script, relatable themes, and a hint of anarchy, – it’s a perfect musical for school groups.

In case you haven’t seen the Jack Black film, the crux of the story is: Dewey Finn, a wannabe rock-star masquerades as his supply teacher friend and gets a job at a private school. He uncovers amazing, yet, hidden musical talents in his class and secretly starts a school rock band. The cast is incredible and I challenge anyone to leave the theatre not singing the catchy musical numbers, or googling guitar/keyboard/drum lessons.

Watching the show, it’s difficult to believe that the children’s band plays live each night – something our young guests find both amazing and inspirational. The three alternating bands in the original cast won a much deserved Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music in 2017, by way of recognition for their nightly performances.

It’s also hard to believe that the show is an Andrew Lloyd Webber production, known as he is for his classic and romantic musicals (Phantom of the Opera, Cats etc). The new songs created by Lloyd Webber and his team sit alongside those fans will recognise from the film and make a brilliant addition.

Known to many as ‘the King of Musicals’, Lloyd Webber has also made an impressive investment in the promotion of musical education in schools, with his foundation donating £1.4m to the Music in Secondary Schools Trust that is enabling nearly 4,000 students to receive free instruments and tuition – apt given the themes behind this latest success.

The show has such a massive feel-good factor and is sure to inspire both teachers and staff to draw out hidden talents, enjoy learning in a different way, work as a team and celebrate the art of music. And behind the fun sit themes of inclusion, friendship and personal identity, meaning it ticks the PSHE box as well as being an ideal choice for Music, Drama and performing arts groups. There’s even a fantastic education pack available, for pre and post-show discussion in the classroom.

We’re not the only ones raving about it either:

“The children loved the School of Rock and would love to see it again!” Trewirgie Junior School

 “Terrific Fun” The Daily Mail

The Most enjoyable few hours money can buy” Daily Telegraph

A Big hearted show, loud and cheeky, a feel-good experience with a hint of anarchic wildness” Evening Standard
